What HVLS fans are, and why these are the sizes

HVLS means high volume, low speed. It is the industry name for the large ceiling fans you see in warehouses and gyms: a big ceiling fan turning slowly to move an enormous column of air using very little power. Every fan in this range uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor driving the blades directly, so there is no gearbox, no oil to change and nothing to drip on the stock below. The blades are aluminium-magnesium alloy rather than steel, so a humid shed or a wash-down area will not corrode them.

All six run at 38dB, quiet enough to hold a conversation underneath, which is why they suit gyms, halls and schools as readily as factories. The shallow aerofoil pitch is what lets them move that much air at 15 to 100 rpm instead of tearing at it. Speed is fully variable through the included frequency controller, and reverse mode makes them useful in winter as well.

They mount to concrete, I-beam or square steel with the hardware supplied, and each is rated for the roof heights in the table above. Because they are hardwired to a controller, they need a licensed electrical contractor, which is also what keeps the 5-year warranty valid.

How to choose your size

Roof height first. The fan needs clear air above and below. The 3.7m to 5m suit roofs from 3 to 6m; the 6.1m and up want 5m minimum and work best from 8m.

Then floor area. Match coverage to the open floor, then add a fan for every structural break: racking runs, mezzanines and dividing walls each cut a fan’s reach.

Then obstructions. Gantry cranes, sprinklers and lighting runs decide the mounting position, and sometimes the size, below what coverage alone would pick. That is what the site check settles before anything is ordered.

Then the supply. The motors take 220 to 240V single phase or 380 to 460V three phase. Tell us what is at the site and the controller is configured to match it.

Send us the roof height and floor area and we will size it for you.

Installation and your 5-year warranty

These fans are hardwired to a variable frequency controller and mounted to structural steel or concrete, so they must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor. The 5-year warranty depends on it, and it is void if the fan is later relocated. We quote supply and install together, as an authorised Down Under Fans reseller, with our own licensed electricians across New South Wales.

How many fans does a warehouse need?
Divide the open floor area by the coverage figure for your chosen size, then add one fan per structural division. A 3,000m² warehouse with two racking runs typically takes three 6.1m fans rather than two.
Are these fans single phase or three phase?
The motors support both, at 220 to 240V or 380 to 460V. Tell us the supply at your site when you request a quote and we will configure the controller to match.
How quiet is 38dB really?
About the level of a quiet library. You can run a toolbox talk underneath one of these at normal speaking volume, which is why they suit gyms and halls as well as factories.
What is included with each fan?
The fan, blades, mounting hardware for your structure type, the variable frequency speed controller and the manuals. Extension rods and smart controls are optional extras.
