Why halls and classrooms choose fans over ducted air

A hall used a few hours a day cannot justify a ducted system sized for its volume. The quote comes in at a figure a committee cannot carry, the ductwork has nowhere sensible to go, and the running costs sit on the budget every term whether the hall is full or empty.

A high volume, low speed fan changes the equation. One mounting point, no ducting through the roof structure, and running costs in the hundreds of watts: the smaller HVLS fans draw 370W to 750W, the largest 7.3m fan draws 1100W at full output. School halls and assembly spaces

A full-size assembly hall typically takes the 3.7m industrial ceiling fan, which covers 380 m² from a single mounting point at heights between 3 and 5m. For larger halls the 4.3m and 5m fans extend coverage to 450 and 500 m² respectively, still from one point on the structure.

Placement has to clear what else lives in the roof space. Stage lighting bars, basketball backboards, services and access ladders all compete for the same volume, and the blades need clearance from every one of them. The site check settles exactly where the fan hangs before anything is ordered, so the answer arrives before the purchase order does.

Classrooms, staff rooms and libraries

Classrooms and libraries rarely have the height for an HVLS fan, which is why the commercial ceiling fan range starts at mounting heights of 2.5m. The 2.4m fan covers 140 m² and the 3m unit covers 210 m², each drawing 300W and running at 38dB.

That last figure is the one that matters in a teaching space. The fan moves a column of air across the room quietly enough that a teacher at the front is heard without raising their voice, and it stays on during lessons rather than being switched off because it is intrusive.

School gyms and sports halls

Sports halls have the volume and the roof height that HVLS fans are built for. The 6.1m and 6.7m fans cover 1,000 and 1,300 m² from mounting heights of 5m and up, pushing 11,500 to 12,000 m3 of air per minute across the floor below.

Blades sit well above ball height for the sports played under them, with the actual clearance agreed at the site check against your roof structure and your lines of play. Every fan carries a safety cable rated independently of the bracket, so the mounting is backed up by a second, separate line of restraint.

Covered outdoor learning areas and canteens

Covered outdoor learning areas and canteens are the spaces air conditioning cannot touch. Roofed but open-sided, they have no walls to hold conditioned air in, so air movement is the only thing that works there. A fan does not try to cool the space, it keeps air moving across everyone under the roof, which is what makes a hot afternoon usable.

An open structure needs its mount and its exposure checked on site. Wind exposure, the span of the beams and the fixing detail all get looked at before we quote, so the fan that goes in is the right one for that structure.

Installing in term breaks

School calendars leave narrow windows, so the work is staged around them. The site check happens in term, when the hall and the roof space can be walked and photographed. The fan is ordered, freighted and staged, and the installation happens in the term break when the hall is empty.

Quiet enough for assemblies and exams

Every fan in the range runs at 38dB. A speech carries over it, an assembly proceeds without the fan being noticed, and an exam room stays quiet enough for the strictest invigilator.

This is the specification that rules out most industrial fans. High speed fans move air the loud way, and a hall that cannot be spoken in is a hall that cannot be used. Low speed, large diameter fans move more air at a fraction of the noise, which is why this range suits school buildings in particular.

Purchase orders, procurement and certification records

Schools buy through purchase orders, so we quote and invoice that way. The quote is made out to the procurement entity, whether that is the school itself or the P&C raising the funds, and invoicing follows your process.

Questions from schools

Our hall has timber trusses. Can a fan still be mounted?
Yes. Timber structures get an engineered mount specified per building after a site check, so the fixing is designed for your actual trusses rather than assumed. Structural steel and concrete use the standard mounting method, and every installation is carried out by a licensed electrical contractor.
Is it safe to run a fan over a court or under a stage rig?
